Library Reopening Plan Fall 2020

warning The SFC library is excited to welcome back SFC students and staff for the Fall semester. Due to campus cleaning and social distancing requirements the library will only open Tuesdays 10am-4pm during the Fall semester (starting Sept. 15th). We will be open for book/DVD pick ups and returns only.

Note: All SFC Library materials and Interlibrary Loan materials can also be returned to the HUB (Mon-Fri, 11am-3pm)

Even though we cannot provide in-person services, the library will continue to provide support to SFC faculty and students through an expanded selection of electronic services. Check out the box below for more information about our re-opening policies and online services.

** We will continue to monitor developments and adjust our policies to ensure that we are providing the best possible service while keeping both our staff and the SFC community safe. Please check back here for the latest updates. (Last updated 10/15/20) **

Beginning Tuesday September 15th, the library will open every Tuesday 10am-4pm. The library will be open only for book pick ups and returns.

Due to cleaning and social distancing requirements there will be no access to the stacks, study areas and computer labs except for library staff. Face masks and social distancing are required at all times in the library.

To check out items you must use our Check Out Request Form to request books and DVD’s from our circulating collection and to schedule a pick-up day for the items. Only library staff will be allowed in the stacks to retrieve books. If you have not completed this form, you cannot check out a book/DVD.

You must select a date to collect your items. If you cannot make it to pick the items up on this date, please contact us (library@sfc.edu).

If you do not collect your items on the specified date, we cannot guarantee they will still be available for you.

All library items will be quarantined for 72 hours between check outs. Due to this, unfortunately we will not be able to check out reserve textbooks during the Fall semester. Only items from our circulating collections can be checked out. Items in the following locations cannot be checked out:

TEXTBOOK RESERVES
PROFESSORS' RESERVES
REFERENCE COLLECTION

If you are unsure about an item's location, you can find it listed in the catalog record:

library location

All library materials can be dropped off in the returns bin located by the library entrance or returned at the circulation desk during library open hours (Tuesday 10am-4pm).

You can also return all SFC Library materials and Interlibrary Loan materials at the HUB (Monday - Friday from 11am-3pm).

Off-campus library users have continued access to all of the library’s electronic resources. You will need your SFC log-in information in order to access them off-campus.

You can find electronic resources using our all-in-one search on the library homepage. Or you can skip straight to our eBook catalog and databases to search for electronic resources.

You can find more information about SFC campus policies and the school's Back To Brooklyn Fall 2020 reopening plan at https://www.sfc.edu/about/backtobk.

The SFC Library is still here to provide library instruction for all interested classes. We have librarians eager to join your online class and introduce your students to the library’s resources.

We also have a series of short video tutorials introducing popular library databases and electronic resources. You can find our collection of videos on the SFC Library Youtube Channel.

Please contact a librarian to discuss library instruction for your class or to request video tutorials on particular topics.

The Library is pleased to offer our services as Embedded Librarians. A librarian can be added to your Canvas pages for any course. It will allow us to post links to library resources that are targeted to the subject matter of your course as well as relevant library instruction videos. In addition, it would allow your students direct access to a dedicated librarian to answer their research questions.

Additional information on our Embedded Librarian Program can be accessed on our website at https://library.sfc.edu/services/embeddedlibrarian.

Any questions? Contact Mona Wasserman at mwasserman@sfc.edu

Need an eBook for your course? Great news! We're still ordering eBooks!

For general books (ie. non-textbooks) assigned to students in your class, be sure to request the library order titles as unlimited simultaneous user eBooks where possible. This will ensure that all students can access the book simultaneously through the library website at any time.

To request the library purchase a title, please visit library.sfc.edu/services/faculty and complete the Faculty Request Form.

Since students will not be able to check out reserve textbooks during the Fall semester, please consider using Open Education Resources (OER) instead of commercial textbooks. OER textbooks are openly licensed and freely accessible. OER textbooks provide students with free, high quality course materials that they can access online at any time.

For more information about OER, contact a librarian or visit library.sfc.edu/openeducation. You can also upload your syllabus online and receive OER recommendations from a librarian.

We will continue offering Interlibrary Loan services during the Fall semester. To make a request, use one of the forms on our ILL page.

Note: We are currently only processing ILL Article requests. Due to challenges in the delivery system we are unable to accept ILL Book requests at this time.

Our collection of Library Guides organize and highlight relevant resources for particular subject areas. We also have tutorials to help students master a variety of skills and technologies. Contact us to request a Library Guide for a course you teach.
