Technology and Special Education
Technology plays a crucial role in the SE classroom. Assistive Technology is the umbrella term for any device that makes functioning easier for people with disabilities. Here are 3 examples that can enhance learning in the SE classroom.
1. Text-To-Speech Programs
Many web browsers, textual based software, and research databases have text-to-speech feature. Not only is this helpful for learners with vision issues, but also for students that learn better by listening or have learning disabilities like dyslexia.
2. Dictation Programs
Dictating programs transcribe speech. This is helpful for students with motor skill impairments that make writing with pens/pencils or typing impossible. Teachers can also use it to transcribe their lessons.
3. Interactive Boards and Touchscreens Hardware
Pair with specialized apps or software, this kind of hardware can tailor to particular needs of individual students.
