What is Cardiac Imaging?

Cardiac imaging is a subspecialty of diagnostic radiology. A cardiac radiologist supervises or performs and then interprets medical images to diagnose diseases of the heart such as heart disease, leaky heart valves and defects in the size and shape of the heart.

Cardiac (heart) imaging tests include:

  • CT Coronary Angiography (CTCA)
  • Coronary Artery Calcium Scoring
  • Echocardiogram
  • MRI Heart (Cardiac MRI)

This echocardiogram of the heart shows tricuspid valve insufficiency.

What is Chest Imaging?

Chest imaging provides a good outline of the heart and usually can reveal a serious disorder in the lungs, the adjacent spaces, or the chest wall, including the ribs. Although chest x-rays seldom give enough information to determine the exact cause of the abnormality, they can help a doctor determine whether and which other tests are needed to make a diagnosis.

Chest imaging tests include

  • X-rays
  • Computed tomography (CT)
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Nuclear scanning
  • Ultrasonography
  • Positron emission tomography (PET) scanning

Normal adult chest x ray.

What is Thoracic Imaging?

Thoracic Imaging specializes in the study and diagnosis of non-cardiac diseases of the chest involving: the lungs, the mediastinum (region of the chest containing structures such as the trachea and esophagus), the pleura (lining of the lungs), and the chest wall.

Thoracic imaging tests include:

  • High-resolution chest CT
  • CT angiography of the aorta and pulmonary arteries
  • Conventional chest radiography.

A computed tomography (CT) scan through a patient's chest.

The collapsed lung appears at the right of the image.
